Where Silence Found Me — An Evening at Buddha Temple, Dehradun

Dehradun was still carrying the noise of the afternoon when I turned towards the Buddha Temple. Vehicles rushed past, shops were busy, and the city seemed to be moving without pause.

But the moment I entered the temple grounds, everything slowed down.

Tall trees lined the pathway, colourful prayer flags moved gently in the breeze, and the sound of traffic slowly faded behind me. Ahead, the temple stood beautifully against the evening sky, its golden details glowing in the soft light.

People walked quietly across the courtyard. Families took photographs, children played on the lawn, and a few visitors simply sat beneath the trees.

I found a quiet corner and sat down.

At first, I took out my phone, trying to capture the temple, the flags and the sky. But every picture felt incomplete.

The place was not asking to be captured.

It was asking to be felt.

A monk walked past in maroon robes, calm and unhurried. Watching him made me realise how rarely we move without rushing. Even while travelling, we are often busy completing lists instead of truly being present.

As the sun began to set, the temple walls turned warmer and the sound of chanting drifted through the grounds. I could not understand the words, but somehow, they made everything inside me quieter.

My worries had not disappeared. The city outside was still crowded, and life was still waiting.

But when I left the temple, I carried something with me.

A little silence.

A slower breath.

And the feeling that, for a brief moment, peace had found me.
